More about the Fra Fra People

woman weaving basketThese beautiful and functional baskets are hand-woven near the town of Bolgatanga, close to the edge of the Sahara Desert. The climate is extremely dry, making agriculture very difficult. As a result, basket weaving has become the main income for this region.

The weavers meet under two trees in their village to work on their baskets. By meeting together like this, they can visit as they work and also the children are able to play together.

Every third day there is a big basket market in Bolgatanga and all the weavers from the surrounding villages come from all over by foot, bicycles, local busses, and taxis to bring their baskets to market.
